Nang Eye 2016 Episode 3 Recaps - Maria's Confidence
The Thai Consulate will be holding a Songkran event and hopes to invite some students from Victoria Convent to perform. On the way out of Principal Atigan's office, Tip met Nang who was punished for talking too much in class. Tip sure knows how to deal with Nang as he took a photo of Nang standing with a ruler in her mouth and sign saying "I talked too much in class" and threatened to post it on Facebook or Instagram.
All the students are vying to win the opportunity to perform, including Sai who tried to showcase her performance of the traditional Thai drum, warning off all others who planned on competing with her. As Nang and friends tried out some possible dance performance they could perform, Maria was visibly upset as she could not partake in any of them due to her condition. Si filled Nang in on how Maria became paralysed legs down when she fell from the stairs at a young age. Due to her condition, she had to visit the doctors regularly and tended to lag behind in school work, giving Sai more reason to snide her. Nang is determined to prove that disability is not a problem.
Nang could not sleep and sneaked out to the consulate again. Just when she was looking around the kitchen, Bale came in, catching her right in the act. Nang watched as Bale expertly made chocolate milk for her. When Bale should be sending Tip's nightly milk to him, Nang requested to surprise him by bringing the milk herself, along with some gummy bear candies she had brought. After "uncle" and "saisede", we now have "Khun Barry" also known as Bale, much to the amusement of Tip. As Tip asked Nang for her purpose of visiting, Nang asked for his advice on the issue of Maria which is stopping her from sleeping. Tip informed that everyone was born with their unique gifts, which they may not be aware of. As Tip chased Nang off to bed, Nang picked a handful of the gummy bears which Tip teased correctly that she had brought for herself instead. Tip reminded Nang not to visit him again, as it was against the rules. Lol at Tip's helpless expression and Bale's dash out of the room when Tip stared at him for allowing Nang to do as she pleased.
The next day during choir session, Nang was sitting next to Maria, still thinking of what Tip had said. Just then, Nang heard a sweet singing voice which she traced to Maria. She had found Maria's unique gift. At lunch, Sai gloated at Nang that anyone who competed against her is doomed to lose. She has to and will always be the first. Nang rebutted that the winner is not decided by Sai and that one person's victory cannot be compared to victory contributed by the entire team. More contrast of Nang and Sai's personality.
Time for their internal talent display. Nang, Maria, Si, Honlan and Janya (Team Voice of Love) came in their school tracksuits while Sai, Joycam and Mina (Team Angel) arrived in their exquisite costumes looking down on Nang and gang. Janya dejectedly remarked that Sai and team are too strong for anyone to surpass. In return, Nang thinks that victory is not the priority and the most important part is that they believe in themselves.
At night, Nang expressed her disbelief that Tip and Sai are siblings as their personalities differed very much, while Si expressed her surprise at Nang's willingness to apologise to Sai. Nang explained that she knew she was wrong for talking about someone's father and that she would be in trouble should her father learn of it. Nang told Si that she was very close to her father and asked if Si was close to hers. This left Si and Sai who was secretly listening in on the conversation tearing silently.
Comes the day of the performance. In their competition to see who reaches the meeting location first, Sai and Nang got themselves looking like a mess. Sai was obviously smitten with Compun who was sent to pick them up, but Compun only had eyes for Nang. Madam Audrey voiced her worry at Tip sending Compun instead of a driver, worrying that Compun would gain the interest of the girls with his friendly behaviour. On the way to the consulate, their car was surpassed by Chaipong on his motorcycle which caught Nang's eyes. When Compun told her that Chaipong was his brother, Nang started musing about riding the motorcycle and helping Compun to drive the car, which was initially agreed by Compun but protested by Sai who pointed out that they would get into trouble with Tip.
When they arrived at the consulate, they were immediately greeted by Bale who managed to name each of the students, but pretended to not know Nang, to the delight of Nang. Nang was introduced to Bale who is Tip's butler. Away from everyone's eyes, Bale told Nang that he had prepared delicious cookies especially for her. Lol I am loving Bale and Nang's friendship too.
Si was lost in the maze of the consulate after exiting from the washroom. She passed by a room full of macaroons and out came Chaipong, the creator of them. Si tried to hide much to the amusement of Chaipong who told her she didn't have to, as he is not a Sister. Chaipong was obviously taken by Si's beauty. Si told Chaipong she had lost her way, to which he offered to send her to where she was supposed to be.
Compun was following Nang everywhere, even causing Sai to bump into the drums, much to an upset Sai. As Nang and Si were introduced to Chaipong, Nang pleaded with Chaipong to see his motorcycle and wanted to take a ride on it which Chaipong agreed that he would take her next time. Just then, Tip appeared and was puzzled when Nang refused to greet him. Tip remarked that boys and girls should not be together alone, and sent a helper to guide the girls back to the waiting room while sending Compun to help with the decorations. Tip picked Nang out individually, lecturing her and denying her wish to ride a motorcycle with Chaipong. He then questioned Nang on why she refused to greet him today, which Nang answered she no longer likes "uncle" as he is Saisuda's brother. Just then, Bale came in with the cookies and milk, successfully melting Nang's unhappiness away.

Tip wanted to know what misunderstanding Nang has with Sai, which Nang refused to reveal in case Tip tells the teachers. Nang voiced her disbelief that Tip and Sai are siblings, while Tip told Nang that she and Sai might become friends in the future. Nang replied that she doesn't know about the future, but at the moment no way would she be friends with Sai who always has to win. Nang questioned Tip if he was the same, to which Tip exchanged a look with Bale. Tip reminded his disagreement with her riding a motorcycle with Chaipong before leaving, to which Nang replied Tip doesn't know youngsters' minds. Lol. Nang was puzzled as she asked Bale why Tip behaved the way he did.
Sai was picking out flowers with Joycam and Mina when Compun passed by with the comment that the girl (Sai) is prettier than the flower. This left Sai visibly shy as she teased Compun about sweet-talking to girls. Compun left with Sai looking all smiley at the flowers.
During Sai's performance, Compun was impressed with Sai and team's performance. Maria was shaken by Sai's team's great performance and worried they would not match up to them, which Nang encouraged Maria that she had great gifts and should be confident. When the performance ended, the guest presented Sai with a bouquet of flowers while Tip praised Sai for her performance. As Nang's team prepared for their performance, Sai made fun of them dressed in their old-fashioned uniform. Nevertheless, Maria and team impressed with her wonderful singing and their team work. The performance ended with loud applause, to the chagrin of Sai. Maria was elated that the performance was well received.
Nang and friends partook in the carnival after the performance. Tip looked for Nang, asking her if she could call him something else when she addressed him as "uncle". Nang replied that she will have to call him "pek" (chinese way of addressing an uncle older than your father) then, which Tip said he preferred "uncle". Tip voiced his amusement at Nang, who seemed mischievous but could do something well if she set her mind to it. He told her what she had done meant a lot to Maria, to which she replied that friends should encourage and support one another as the teachers have taught. She had listened and remembered the teachers' teachings, but most of all, she remembers a pek who speaks like her mum. Lol.
An unhappy Sai tripped Nang into dropping the sweets she was holding. Exasperated, Nang told her to start appreciating others' strengths instead of looking down on and picking on others. Otherwise, she would end up alone because nobody would be able to tolerate such a person. Nang and Sai ended in a pushing match which landed both of them in a makeshift games pond, only stopping when Tip arrived. Tip lectured them on the usual unity of fellow Thais and warned Sai not to let him know that she's picking on others.
Just as Nang was mimicking a motorcycle and reminding Chaipong of his promise, Tip exited from the building. Reminding Nang that she should tone down, he passed her a paper bag and told her to remember to eat the item inside. An upset Sai was about to leave when Tip passed her a similar bag and told her the same. Sai obviously holds Tip to high regards and seeks his approval, probably why she vies to be the first in everything.

Back in the hostel, the paper bags contained cold medicine which Tip had prepared. Si remarked that Tip appeared stern but is kind-hearted and worried that Nang would catch a cold. Nang replied that Si should treat Sai better since she likes Sai's brother. Nang teased Si that she would open her eyes wide, smile brightly and speak softly when talking to Tip. Lol.
The next day, Tip was packing some documents in the consulate when a paper plane flew right in front of him. It was a drawing thanking a "naggy but kind-hearted uncle" for the medicine. Looking out of the window, Nang was waving from the top of the school wall. Cute.
The girls received letters from their parents but no letter came for a worried Si. Sai pointed out that Si's mother had neither visited nor written her a letter for months, that she must have forgotten about her. Nang stepped out that Si's mother could have been too busy and rebutted that Sai didn't get any too. She then consoled Si that she didn't get any either. However, Si was upset as there had been no news from her mother for a long while. Nang asked Sai if seeing other people upset made her happy. In fact, Sai barely looked happy herself, she misses her mum too.
Si remarked that rich children like Sai tended to be jealous and wished others unwell. She then apologised to Nang who's father is a minister, to which Nang replied that her father had taught her to be humble. Si commented that Nang's father had raised her well to be a kind person, that he must be a good person too. Nang replied that her father is a slightly strict but good person. Nang talked more about her father, of how Nang's duty is to study well while her father's duty is to provide happiness for the family. Her father is both a father and a friend to her. Si started crying as she recalled her own father who had abandoned her mother and her while she was in elementary school, despite the pleadings of her mother. Nang learned from Madam Teresa that Silina's father had left her at a young age and she got particularly upset when someone talks about their father. Si expressed her worry that her mother would abandon her as her father had, to which Madam Teresa consoled that Si should become her mother's encouragement as her mother supported the family.
At night, Si could not sleep and was crying with unanswered worry. Nang sneaked a surprised Si and herself out to the consulate where she asked Tip to help call Si's mother. While Si felt sorry to trouble Tip, Nang made herself at home with the sumptuous supper Bale provided. Tip reprimanded Nang on her behaviour and told her not to bring all the children without letters to his residence. Lol. He once again reminded her not to come again as it is against the rules. As if his "warnings" ever worked with Nang haha.
As Nang and Si sneaked back to the dormitory, Nang did not manage to get into the room before Madam Frances came by for her rounds. Witty Nang pretended to be sleep walking and crying for her parents, successfully earning the sympathy of Madam Frances who helped Nang back to her bed. Lying on her bed, mischievous Nang said "good night" which rendered Frances unsure if Nang had truly been sleep walking.
Joycam and Sariya were practising the piano in the music room when they heard cries and screams for them to get out. Terrified, they ran out of the room where they ran into Principal Atigan and Madam Margarita. Walking into Madam Bonlin's office, Principal Atigan and Madam Margarita saw Madam Bonlin crying at her desk, telling them that she feels useless and wants to die. She doesn't feel like doing anything and cannot stop crying. Principal Atigan consoled Bonlin that she is the best singer in the school. Bonlin suffers from depression and requires medicine to control her emotions, which explains her mood swings. However, she is reluctant to take her medicine as she doesn't want to feel like a lunatic. Principal Atigan manages to convince Bonlin that she is simply ill and will get better with medicine and faith in god.
Si is homesick and worried that her mother is sick. Ever since Si's father left them, her mother has not had anyone by her side. Nang observed that Si appeared happy but have such a sad past. Si informed that she did not want to make Nang unhappy by sharing unhappy things. Si feels that someone like her will not be loved and will only burden others. She thinks she may become a nun at the convent in the future. Nang replied that they are friends, that she loves Si and Si will never be alone no matter what happens. The two hug.
In the dormitory, Nang, Si and Sariya were discussing the teachers' appearances when Sai tipped the teachers off. As they were laughing about Madam Margarita being the ugliest and Nang once lying to her, they turned to find Madam Frances and Madam Margarita standing right behind them. Upon Nang's insistence to be punished with her friends, Nang was punished to stand outside the room for two hours for not listening to Madam Frances' words while her Si and Sariya were punished for an hour. Sai was told to monitor the girls, to her delight, though rightly noted by Mina and Joycam, that makes Sai no difference from being punished too.
This drama tries to achieve a lot, such as bringing across the fact that we should not judge things or persons from the surface in Si's case. That mental illness is normal and should not have negative connotations in Bonlin's case, and they deserve and can lead a normal life with treatment. That disability should not be an obstacle and everyone has a gift of their own in Maria's case. All the characters are more than their surface and have a story behind them, which makes them all the more alive and captivating. Though I have to say, give me more of Nang and Taan Consul please!
